Tragic events unfolded at a high school graduation ceremony held on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University.

Gunfire rang out, killing seven people. Unfortunately, two victims, a father and son, died in the incident.

The chaotic scene was captured on video by a participant and shared on Facebook.

A 19-year-old suspect was apprehended by police as he attempted to flee. Acting Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards announced the suspect will be charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

One of the deceased was an 18-year-old student who had just graduated from Huguenot High School, while the other victim was his stepfather, a 36-year-old man who had come to attend the graduation ceremony.

The community was deeply shaken and distressed by the shooting incident. Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney expressed concern, pointing to the presence of children who were directly affected on what was to be their special graduation day.

Mayor Stoney raised the troubling question of whether there is anything left that can be considered sacred in society, reflecting the angst and disbelief surrounding the tragic event.

Among the victims affected by the shooting was a nine-year-old girl, identified as the younger sister of Shawn Jackson, whose story was highlighted in the GoFundMe campaign.

The fundraiser described her as being in a wheelchair due to injuries sustained after being hit by a bus.

According to Chief Edwards, the girl received initial treatment at the scene and was later taken to a local hospital, where she continues to recover from non-life-threatening injuries.

The chief described his injuries as “very minor” at a press conference on Wednesday.

A wave of condolences poured in from people who sympathize with the victim’s family.

Many people have expressed their support and are actively sharing their condolences to help bring comfort during this difficult time.

Additionally, there is a collective effort to raise money through the GoFundMe campaign to help the family with financial burdens.
