Sports Broadcast Consultant Dave Brown KRGV South Texas Has Passed Away

Death of Dave Brown – Channel 5’s longtime former sports director Dave Brown has died unexpectedly. KRGV Athletic Director Dave Brown has passed away after retiring from KRGV in 2020. He was announced dead on Monday, June 5, 2023. Dave was a sports icon in South Texas.

I grew up watching Dave Brown on KRGV, especially during high school football season. I sat on my couch waiting for his “Game of the Week” announcement. Then when I entered the profession, I got to know Dave on a personal level. He and my old boss Buddy Green were very good friends. He was always funny and professional with me. At first I was a little impressed because it’s an icon of the valley. Rest in peace Dave. Tell Buddy we miss him and the Mets still suck.

Brown, who would deliver his sports broadcasts without a script in hand or in the teleprompter, opted out as a special contributor to KRGV’s sports department. Brown stepped down from his position as sporting director and regular sportscaster in 2009.

Brown was known for some of his franchise elements like 60 Sports Seconds, a reel of highlights and lowlights in the sports world, and Dave’s Dozen, his weekly high school football rankings in the RGV.

KRGV Sports would like to congratulate Dave on a phenomenal 45 year run with Channel 5 and we wish him the best on his retirement.
