Monroe High School holds first campuswide Decision Day program since 2019

ALBANY – The graduating class of Monroe High School made their after-graduation intentions identified Friday, with some heading to schools close to house or in different states and a few embarking on a future within the navy.

For Khalia McClendon, the first cease would be the U.S. Air Force, though she plans to later pursue additional training.

“I just want to travel the world, meet new people and see new things,” she mentioned. “I want to go ahead now to start my career and do something different in my family.”

The senior, who would be the first in her household to hitch the navy, additionally has one other dream.

“I want to try to become one of the first black women pilots,” she mentioned.

About 55 of the 64 seniors who’ve made their selections for what’s to come back after commencement have been at Friday’s ceremony, and college students from ninth-grade by means of members of their graduating class have been readily available to cheer them on.

“Today was Decision Day for our graduating students,” Shawanna Price-Wise, director of counseling and steerage at Monroe, mentioned.

Some of the scholars can be staying in southwest Georgia at close by faculties, together with Albany State University and Georgia Southwestern State University. Others can be heading so far as Kentucky State University and North Carolina State University.

The 2024 Decision Day ceremony was the first one which concerned all the campus since 2019, the yr earlier than the COVID-19 pandemic, Price-Wise mentioned. A scaled-down ceremony was held in 2023.

“This one had the entire student body,” she mentioned. “It’s just amazing. I was really excited to plan this event. A lot of these students were home their freshmen and sophomore years. We wanted to really get them involved.”

There are about 210 college students within the 2024 Monroe graduating class.
