Lafourche Parish Pedestrian Accident
Based on the findings of the preliminary investigation, it was determined that Helm was driving a Craftsman lawn mower as he attempted to cross LA Hwy 1 from the northbound shoulder. On the same freeway at the same time, a 2023 GMC 3500 headed north on LA Hwy 1. As Helm crossed the road, he got directly in the way of the GMC. The GMC driver applied the brakes and turned right to try to avoid a collision, but the lawnmower got stuck in the path of the vehicle.
Helm suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the GMC and their two passengers were all safely strapped in and suffered no injuries as a result of the crash. Although impaired driving is not believed to have been a contributing factor to this accident, a routine toxicology sample was taken from Helm and sent for processing.
The individual operating the GMC voluntarily submitted to a breath test, which revealed that there was no trace of alcohol present. The cause of this accident has not yet been determined. When attempting to cross a road, you should always take the time to thoroughly check both directions for oncoming traffic and wait until there is a significant break in the flow of traffic before proceeding. It is essential to act quickly while maintaining a cautious attitude in order to avoid any potential risk.
