In Egypt, a thirteen-storey building, which was usually used by holidaymakers during the summer months, has collapsed, trapping many people under the rubble.

A building in the northern Egyptian metropolis of Alexandria collapsed catastrophically this morning, sending clouds of smoke into the sky.

The actual number of people trapped under the debris has not been determined.

Civil defense first responders gathered at the site of a collapsed 13-story building in the Sidi Bishr neighborhood.

However, rescue teams are searching the location, trying to find survivors and clear the debris after several cars were reportedly hit by the debris.

City officials have yet to provide official details on the casualties, but Alexandria’s governor, Mohammed al-Sharif, said the structure was torn apart by a “vertical split.”

The governor mentioned that the structures were mostly rented out to vacationers during the summer season months. Also, one of the many buildings had a grocery store downstairs.

He added that the highest point was removed before it collapsed because residents were worried about its stability.

Witnesses said they heard an explosion before the structure collapsed.

Reviews suggest that nearby hospitals are on high alert and ready for the arrival of potential victims.
