They said: ‘Craig passed away peacefully today at Ayr University Hospital, following a brief illness, accompanied by dear family members.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the exceptional care and consideration given by the medical staff and the countless messages of encouragement and sympathy from friends and colleagues.

“At this painful time, the family now asks that their privacy be respected during the grieving process.”

Just over 25 years have passed since Brown led the Scottish stars onto the pitch in the opening game of the World Cup in France in 1998.

Craig Brown personal life details

In the 1999 birthday honours, Brown received the designation of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his contributions to football.

In 2001, the University of Abertay awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree to Brown.

Bob, one of his two brothers, served at Queen’s Cross Parish Church in Aberdeen from 1984 until his retirement in 2008.

Jock has been a football commentator. Craig Brown, who goes by the name Brown, is in Lowland League play for the University of Stirling.

Brown was born in Glasgow, but he and his two younger brothers grew up in Troon, Rutherglen and Hamilton while his father moved around for his job as a physical education teacher and then senior adviser.
