Christy Dignam’s illness: Was Aslan’s lead singer sick?

Dignam, the iconic lead singer of Irish rock band Aslan, has sadly passed away after a courageous battle with illness.

His family have shared the heartbreaking news, expressing their gratitude for the outpouring of tributes from fans and friends in Dublin and beyond.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Christy was in hospice care at home after a six-month long hospital stay.

Her daughter, Kiera Dignam, made the sad announcement on behalf of the family, expressing their deep sadness while emphasizing peace at Christy’s passing.

Surrounded by his loved ones, he left for the desired location – his home – at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.

The Dignam family respectfully requested confidentiality during this extraordinarily painful time, urging supporters to honor their need for reassurance and reflection.

This period of mourning was further heightened by the tragic loss of Christopher Dignam Healy, Christy’s 27-year-old nephew, who died suddenly in hospital.

Christy Dignam’s health issue

Prior to her passing, Christy Dignam battled a serious health issue. In 2013, he was diagnosed with amyloidosis, a rare blood disease.

This condition posed significant challenges to his well-being and required ongoing medical care. Christy underwent chemotherapy treatment from 2017 to fight the disease.

In 2017, he received palliative care at his North Dublin residence, supported by a dedicated team and his family.

The care provided in a familiar and comfortable environment was aimed at relieving her suffering during her illness.

Despite his brave fight, he tragically lost his battle with the health issue, leaving a legacy as a talented musician and a beloved figure in the music industry.

Christy has faced many challenges throughout her life, including overcoming drug addiction, enduring childhood sexual abuse, and battling debilitating depression.

Despite these challenges, Christy expressed gratitude for every day he spent with his family, especially cherishing milestones like his grandchildren’s communions and confirmations.

Unfortunately, Aslan had to cancel future shows due to Christy’s declining health, which deeply affected the band members.

Dignam is survived by his wife, Kathryn; his daughter Kiera, singer; his grandsons, Cian and Jake; and granddaughter, Ava.

These beloved family members will carry on his legacy and cherish their shared memories.

Kiera, following in her father’s musical footsteps, continues to make her mark in the music industry.

The presence of her grandchildren brings joy and a sense of continuity to the family, as they represent the future generations who will carry her spirit.

Their love and support during Christy’s difficult journey comforted and strengthened her in her final days.

We offer our most sincere sympathy and condolences during this time of bereavement.
