STAUNTON — The man who was killed in a car accident in Staunton a week ago has been recognized by authorities. The collision between two cars that occurred Friday afternoon at the intersection of Shutterlee Mill Road and Virginia 262 was responsible for the death of an adult and the serious injury of a younger person. Authorities said the two victims were passengers.
Christopher L. Barbour, 20, was identified as the victim by the Staunton Police Department on Monday. Barbour is from Buena Vista. Authorities say a girl that age who was also present during the incident was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. A second adult, identified by authorities as 19-year-old Lazayreah Fields of Staunton, who was driving, was also slightly injured in the incident. According to the Staunton Police Department, a 2011 Kia K5 was traveling southbound on Virginia 262 at 1 p.m. Friday when the driver allegedly attempted to turn left onto Shutterlee Mill Road.
According to the police, the car turned in front of a semi-trailer truck which was traveling in a northbound direction, which caused the incident. The crash reconstruction team and the Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Unit are assisting in the investigation. The investigation into the causes of the incident is still ongoing. A home in Staunton was destroyed by an early morning fire. A woman is currently being treated in hospital after being stabbed four times in Staunton.
