Anger in Italy after holidaymaker scrawled words on wall of Rome’s historic Colosseum
Italians are outraged after an English-speaking man filmed a holidaymaker writing ‘Ivan + Hayley’ on the wall of Rome’s traditional Colosseum.
A bystander filmed a vacationer using a set of keys to carve words into the stone partitions of the 1937 structure.

According to the English-speaking man who recorded the footage, the incident happened last Friday, June 23.
The man, who cut the partitions while wearing shorts and a blue T-shirt, smiled into the digital camera when he realized he was being filmed.

The video was shared on Reddit with the caption: “A*****e tourist carves a name into the Colosseum in Rome.”

In the video, the English-speaking man who filmed the footage claimed otherwise: “Are you serious? This is a rotten person. Stupid jerk.
Other users were quick to respond, sharing their outrage and suggesting that the man’s name was ‘Ivan’ and ‘Hayley’ was his girlfriend.
They additionally directed the poster to send the video to the police so that the vandal could possibly be apprehended.
If caught, he could face a huge fine, which has so far reached as much as £17,000. He could even face a year in jail.
It should not be the first time holidaymakers have been fined for damaging what is considered the most important amphitheater on the planet.
In 2020, an Irish holidaymaker was arrested for carving his initials into the Coliseum in Rome.
Carabinieri police said a 32-year-old man was apprehended at the Coliseum by public safety concerns and immediately reported to officers.
The man’s two initials, about 2 inches high, are said to have been carved with a steel spike on the base of the floor in September 2020.
The unnamed man was accused of damaging a historical and inventive monument.
Fines start at £1,750 (€2,065) and can be up to a year in prison.
Archaeologist Federica Rinaldi, who is responsible for the traditional Roman amphitheater, said that the people who carved their initials on the monument “must own it”.

In 2014, a Russian tourist was fined £17,000 (€20,000) for carving the letter ‘K’ on a piece of masonry.
He added: “The Colosseum, like any monument that reflects the history of all of us, must be preserved and passed on to future generations.”
The Colosseum is considered one of the many Seven Wonders of the Modern World and is a World Heritage Site.
It is together with 54 different Italian websites that write about the historical environment of the city.

The construction of the Colosseum began sometime between 70 and 72 AD and will seat around 50,000 spectators.
